Overload

Overload

A #MyAutismJourney story by Anonymous

One of the hardest things for me is sensory overload. Bright lights, loud sounds and too many people talking can all feel like too much at once. When that happens, I might go quiet or need to leave the room.

For years, I tried to hide it. I didn’t want to seem rude or difficult. I would stay in noisy places even when I felt overwhelmed. Afterward, I would feel completely drained.

Over time, I realised I don’t have to pretend. It’s okay to say, “I need a break.” It’s okay to wear headphones. It’s okay to choose quieter places.

Something that really helped me was talking to other autistic people. Hearing that they felt the same way made me feel less alone. It showed me there’s nothing strange about how I experience the world, it’s just different.

Being autistic means I experience things strongly. That can be hard, but it also means I care deeply about the people and things that matter to me. I’m passionate, honest, and loyal.

If I could ask people for one thing, it would be to listen. Don’t assume. Don’t judge. Just listen.
